Ubongo is building brains and building change for families across Africa through fun edutainment on
accessible technologies. We’re a social enterprise founded and based in Dar es Salaam, and we broadcast our shows Akili and Me and Ubongo Kids across the continent. We’re getting ready to expand our offices and operations into new markets, so we’re looking for energetic and self-starting new Ubongoers to join the team as we grow. Working here won’t be easy, but it will challenge and excite you, with lots of responsibility, plenty of fun, and the opportunity to impact the lives of millions of kids every day.
We’re looking for a dynamic, creative, experienced and detail-oriented Chief Product Officer to lead and grow our product team (user research, pre-production, animation, sound, video and interactive units). You’ll take over the Product Lead responsiblity from our CEO and be in charge of all of our current and future products: animation series, radio programs, apps, ebooks and more!
As a member of the C-Suite, you will also work closely with our CEO and COO to set our short and longterm s as we scale our organization and edutainment to reach millions more kids in Africa.
Responsibilities:
  • As part of C-Suite, you will be a co-owner of Ubongo’s vision, mission and strategy. You must envision, plan, lead, work, adapt and persevere for us to survive and thrive… always doing it for the kids!
  • Own, oversee and continually improve Ubongo’s product development & production, including broadcast content, interactive products and merchandise.
  • Ensure that all products move us toward Ubongo’s vision of helping 440 million kids in Africa learn, and leverage their learning to change their lives.
  • Further develop the Ubongo user research, production & interactive teams, in Tanzania and new geographies: developing leaders in creative, technical and management positions.
  • Keep Ubongo innovating and creating effective and user-centric products that families love, and that can change their lives.
  • Embody and promote Ubongoers’ principles, and work with C-Suite to build and nurture company culture around them.
Tasks:
  • Set strategic Objectives for company with C-Suite and Board, and own/ measure all product related key results.
  • Lead and develop user research, production & interactive teams, directly supervising managers of each unit. Together with Unit Managers, oversee the hiring, work, training and development of each Ubongoer in these teams.
  • Maintain and update Ubongo product roadmap and workplans, and lead the team to execute on them.
  • Manage relationships and workplans with international production partners for localization, adaptation and outsourced product work.
  • Develop and document product-related processes and systems, for current and future Ubongoers.
  • Do whatever else needs to be done to drive Ubongo towards our vision!
Requirements:
  • Master’s degree in related field AND Extensive, demonstrable experience in production leadership and management (please submit a portfolio of products or content you’ve developed, and detail your role in each project).
  • Fluency, with very strong written and oral communication in English and Kiswahili, and ability to speak at least one other language common in Sub-Saharan Africa (preferred).
  • Extremely organized and process oriented.
  • Tech-savvy and able to leverage technology for efficient production, and cloud-based services to manage multi-country teams.
  • Demonstrable leadership in difficult and ambiguous situations.
