The PROTECT Project is a five-year USAID-funded project implemented by International Resources Group (IRG), a subsidiary of RTI International. The objective of PROTECT is to address dynamics in Tanzania that threaten biodiversity conservation and inhibit private sector-led growth in the natural resources sector. PROTECT activities focus on four key areas: (i) policy, research and advocacy; (ii) institutional strengthening; (iii) private sector investment in wildlife sector; and (iv) combat wildlife poaching and trafficking.
 
The Communications Team Leader will lead 1) communications and outreach for all PROTECT activities, 2) PROTECT’s communications grants, and 3) PROTECT’s direct support to USAID on biodiversity communications.
 
The Communications Team Leader will report to the Chief of Party.
Responsibilities:
The Communications Team Leader shall be responsible for supporting the following activities:
  • Lead all communications/stakeholder engagement activities that directly contribute to the technical objectives of PROTECT. 
  • Update and implement PROTECT’s Strategic Communications & Stakeholder Engagement Plan; and orient the technical team on their role in project communications and stakeholder engagement
  • Support technical activities related to social behavior change communications campaigns with communications and social media outreach.
  • With direction from the Chief of Party, liaises with the USAID Development, Outreach, and Communications (DOC) staff on all project branding and marking requirements.
  • Provide leadership and establish guidance for PROTECT on document formats, including branding and marking in accordance with USAID policies.
  • Ensure project communications and branding guidelines and best practices are followed by grantees and PROTECT team.
  • Edit and format technical reports, contract deliverables, and promotional materials, ensuring clear and concise English language usage and professional presentation.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual report submissions relating to communications and outreach.
  • Write press releases, project summaries, fact sheets, social media posts and other communications materials to highlight project successes and challenges.
  • Review and finalize success stories prepared by Communications Specialist.
  • Provide training to staff in effective photography.
  • Develop materials and train current and new PROTECT staff on project communications
  • Identify key public events and campaigns that PROTECT should be made aware of and/or may participate in, in accordance with the technical objectives of the project.
  • Identify and supervise external contractors as necessary to successfully implement PROTECT communications activities
  • Serve as technical lead for PROTECT communication grants including developing a strategy for PROTECT communication grants, identifying potential grantees and important themes, and providing guidance to partners for the implementation of communications-related grants.
  • Liaise closely with the PROTECT COP and PROTECT Grants Manager to ensure the effective and efficient implementation of the communications grants
  • Develop specific communications and outreach strategies, campaigns, and products to support the USAID Tanzania Natural Resources Management Team, per USAID Mission request.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise the Communications Specialist
  • Complete any other duties/activities in line with the project’s objectives, the employee’s abilities, and as directed by the COP.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree required in relevant field and at least 10 years of experience in communications and outreach.
  • At least 5 years USAID communications experience.
  • Experience preparing communications plans.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent communications skills (both written and verbal)
  • Strong photographic skills preferred.
  • Excellent attention to detail, able to meet deadlines and produce quality documents.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills (Word, PowerPoint, Publisher).
  • Must be fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Ability and willingness to be long-term resident in Tanzania.
