The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization with 60 years of
experience in helping to create a safer and more dignified life for refugees and internally displaced people. NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance within the shelter, education, emergency food security, legal assistance, and water,sanitation and hygiene sectors.
The Norwegian Refugee Council has approximately 5000 committed and competent employees involved in projects across four continents. In addition, NRC runs one of the world’s largest standby rosters -NORCAP, with 650 professionals, ready to be deployed on 72 hours notice when a crisis occurs
NRC is therefore seeking a Protection Officers for the NRC Office in Mtendeli/Kakonko-Kigoma, Tanzania. The Protection Officers will report to the Education Project Manager.

Job description 1. Ensure adherence with NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines
  • Ensure that the Education department has up to date, accurate data and analyse such data appropriately to the needs of the department
  • Promote and share ideas for technical improvement
  • Implement delegated Education project portfolio according to plan of action (according to strategy, proposals, budgets, plans and donor requirements)
  • Prepare and develop status reports as required by management
  • Ensure proper filing of documents
  • Ensure that projects target beneficiaries most in need, and explore and asses new and better ways to assist
  • Liaise and collaborate with relevant local authorities and other key stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with relevant partners within the Education sector and represent NRC at relevant meetings
  • Involve and inform communities and community leaders about the activities
  • Provide expertise within the Teacher Training program, by defining training contents, coordination with partners, delivering of training, and monitoring and evaluation;
  • Contribute to comprehensive education assessment for potential new education activities or in new locations;
  • Break down the annual operational plans into weekly, monthly and quarterly implementation plans
  • Ensure that procurement and distribution of education materials and equipment are timely and according to procedures
  • Supervise, train and develop field teams
  • Use collected data effectively to continuously monitor and evaluate the performance of all NRC Educational activities
  • Develop plans for improved education activities on the basis of previous evaluations
  • To undertake any additional duties determined by the Education Coordinator
  • Qualifications
  • Experience working in protection in a humanitarian/recovery context
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Self-motivated, passionate and ready to inspire others on NRCs mandate and our work in protection and advocacy
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Commitment to participatory and inclusive methods of working;
  • A University degree in law, social science, political science or related subject will be considered
  • Knowledge about own leadership skills/profile;
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal. French, Kirundi and/or Kiswahili is an asset

    Personal qualities
  • At least 3 years’ experience in working in a protection-related field including solid knowledge of humanitarian principles and minimum protection standards, applying protection standards to vulnerable beneficiaries, referral services, delivering training and awareness raising programs and writing reports/providing information on protection-related themes, experience in providing advice and ‘on the job’ support to, and structured de-briefing of colleagues.
  • Experience in mainstreaming protection concepts within a humanitarian operation particularly valued.
  • Advanced computer skills, especially in Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
  • Fluency in written and spoken Kirundi, Kiswahili/Ha, French essential and ability to work in English necessary.
