Job Introduction

The BBC World Service remains the leading international broadcaster in Africa, reaching a weekly audience of more than 100 million across all platforms and Social Media. We also broadcast to around 20 million listeners in Eastern and Central Africa and have three daily live radio shows broadcast from Nairobi and Dar es Salaam and a daily award-winning television programme, Dira ya Dunia TV from London with comprehensive coverage of the regional and global agenda.

Africa’s media landscape is changing. It is one of the fastest developing news markets in the world with mobile technology transforming lives, internet connectivity increasing, the radio market remaining relatively strong and Television migrating from analogue to digital.



Role Responsibility

Are you a creative and versatile journalist, with a strong understanding of what makes good digital video and how video is consumed on digital platforms? We're looking for journalist who is a passionate evangelist about digital video storytelling. As the digital landscape is changing you would need to be as nimble as the technologies. You’ll be leading the digital video effort and you need to be able to produce content that works for digital platforms. All candidates will be expected to demonstrate a clear understanding of digital platforms as well as video editing skills.

You will need sound editorial judgment, understanding Africa news agenda in particular the East Africa region, someone who has the ability to tell complex stories in an engaging way, sharp editing skills and the ability respond to breaking news. Candidates should enjoy working under pressure and bring plenty of story and treatment ideas to the role.

The Ideal Candidate

It goes without saying that you will be an innovator, who is always looking for the next best way that our audiences can consume their media.

You will bring demonstrable experience in a previous journalist role, as well as first class written and spoken Kiswahili and English.

You will have experience of video production, editing and storytelling along with experience using video editing software similar to Q-edit or FCPX and an understanding of the African news agenda with particular specialist bias towards the East and Central Africa region. Candidates should enjoy working in a busy newsroom and bring plenty of story and treatment ideas to the role
