The Tanzanian Children’s Fund is seeking two ESOL teachers/teacher trainers to work in rural
Tanzania, supporting teachers and learners in the two local government schools which we are in partnership with: Gyetighi Primary School and Oldeani Secondary School.
Founded by India Howell in 2003, The Tanzanian Children’s Fund operates the Rift Valley Children’s Village, which is a home to 97 children, and a thriving community-based organization providing free healthcare, primary and secondary education, and microfinance loans and training to the residents of Oldeani Ward. RVCV is located in a remote area of Karatu District, adjacent to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
The goal of this contract is to build teachers’ capacity to teach English in order to bring about greater learning outcomes for students, positioning them for future educational and professional success.
The specifics of this job include but are not limited to:
Primary Responsibilities
  • Management of the ESOL program at Gyetighi Primary School or Oldeani Secondary School (One ESOL teacher/teacher trainer will be assigned to each school).
  • Planning, preparing and delivering lessons for both teachers and students addressing a wide range of classes and age groups;
  • Assisting the Education Director in leading professional development seminars
  • Proofreading and proctoring tests, examination papers, and exercises;
  • Observing teachers’ lessons and providing feedback and advising teachers on best teaching practices, strategies to promote student-centered learning, and how to deliver engaging lesson plans;
  • Devising, writing and producing new ESOL materials;
  • Leading and creating lesson plans for extra-curricular school activities;
  • Leading computer training classes in Microsoft Word and Excel for selected primary and secondary school teachers;
  • Providing one-on-one academic and career counseling to secondary school graduates at RVCV;
  • Planning and leading an 8-week intensive English course to prepare primary school students for the transition to secondary school;
  • Advising RVCV volunteers on appropriate educational resources and activities for various age groups
Our Ideal Candidates
  • Are native English speakers
  • Can commit to one year of living and working in a remote area
  • Take initiative in a professional environment with minimal supervision, and are able to design and deliver original lessons with limited resources
  • Have earned a Bachelor’s Degree and a teaching certification for TEFL
  • Have a minimum of 2 years teaching experience
  • Have worked/studied/lived overseas or taught in cross-cultural contexts
  • Have experience in creating needs-based curricula and syllabi
  • Possess a strong work ethic
  • Thrive in a small, close-knit community
  • Enjoy engaging with children, faculty and volunteers in both formal and informal capacities
  • Approach challenges with a positive outlook
  • Possess a strong sense of cultural competency, intuition, and empathy
  • Have some knowledge of Swahili or East African culture/history

BENEFITS

  • $650 monthly stipend ($7,800 a year)
  • $2,000 travel stipend per year
  • Room and Board including private apartment, all meals, internet, local phone, and housekeeping support; transport to town as needed.
