Job description
This is a 3 to 4 month volunteer position in Tanzania starting in January of 2018 (start/end
dates and duration are flexible).
*This position is only eligible for Canadian citizens and Canadian permanent residents*
The goal of this position is to integrate into all Africa Bridge (AB) training curricula (Most Vulnerable Children Committee and co-op) culturally appropriate training methods – with a participatory approach – and train the trainers on the use of this methods, resulting in positive outcomes for semi-literate rural adult learners
Objectives:
- To advise on culturally appropriate M&E tools for assessing outcomes of trainings with the Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist
- To collaborate with the Curriculum Development Specialist on testing the training manuals in the field
- To help refine the manuals after they have been tested
- To train the trainers on training methods and how to use the training manuals effectively
- Coordinate the work with the Curriculum Development Specialist, Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist and prospective Abbott-funded 2016-17 project on entrepreneurship/business/co-op management training development for co-ops
All volunteers are expected to promote gender equality, environmental sustainability and good governance within their placement responsibilities.
Academic Qualifications
- Bachelors or Masters-level (or equivalent) program in a relevant field such as: Communications or Journalism in International Development, or; Human Rights, Development Studies, International Relations or Public Health with a strong focus on Communications
Professional Background / Skills
- Experience in using participatory approaches and conducting needs-assessments
- Experience developing training materials and training plans for semi-literate, rural populations in developing countries
- Experience working with adult learners in developing countries
- Experience working in the vocational / technical training field and leading Training of Trainers (ToT)
- Knowledge of best practices for vocational / technical training delivery
- Previous international work / volunteer experience in Tanzania or other developing country
- Effective cross-cultural communication skills
- Commitment to the principles of volunteer cooperation and familiarity with participatory approaches to development, including the promotion of gender equality, good governance and environmental sustainability
VWB/VSF-Canada covers costs including:
- Travel and accommodation for the five-day pre-departure training course in Ottawa
- Return airfare to placement country and visa/permit costs
- The cost of required vaccinations, anti-malarial medication and overseas emergency travel health insurance
- A modest monthly living allowance (MLA) that will be paid into the volunteer’s bank account in Canada. The MLA is designed to be sufficient to cover simple housing, basic food requirements and other typical monthly living expenses.
