Project Manager, Tanzania
Job Purpose:
The Project Manager will be responsible for managing and delivering all aspects of BBC Media Action Tanzania’s new upcoming primary education project. The Project Manager will be responsible for the overall management of the project, in particular ensuring the project has the maximum possible impact with audiences and partners with a continuous focus on learning, monitoring and improving how we support education in Tanzania.
Location: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Reports to: Senior Projects Manager
Contract duration: 15 months, anticipated start date in November 2017 subject to funding

Main Duties:
- To deliver the project on time, to budget and to the highest standards in terms of quality, effectiveness, impact and relevance, meeting objectives clearly defined in the project proposal;
- Responsible for the co-ordination, planning, budgeting, reporting and general management of all aspects of the project. This includes working with BBC Media Action staff in Tanzania and London to define and develop programme direction, strategies and activities;
- Work closely with internal production, research and training teams to ensure that project objectives are being met;
- Maintaining external relationships with project partners, donors and other stakeholders, representing the Tusome Pamoja project to the highest professional standards;
- Ensure all project activities are fully compliant with USAID regulations, and BBC and BBC Media Action policies and editorial guidelines;
- Support the project and production teams to understand issues related to education and literacy, and the role of media and communications in this sector;
- Work closely with Research team to ensure research activities (including formative research, monitoring and evaluation of outputs and baselines and end line quantitative data) are in line with project objectives;
- May include line management of a Project Officer;
- Prepare donor and internal reports on projects progress and impact and lesson learning data;
- Commission, write and manage web and communications related information on project progress, lessons and impact;
- Generate new project ideas and proposals to further strengthen the impact and reach of BBC Media Action’s portfolio in Tanzania;
- Perform any other duties that may be assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience required
- At least 3 years’ experience in international development, with demonstrable experience in project planning and management of systems;
- Experience managing the project budget cycle – project design, budget development and management, work-plan and schedule building, implementation of activities, monitoring progress against objectives, reviewing and reporting;
- Experience of working on USAID funded projects, with thorough knowledge of USAID rules and regulations will be an added advantage;
- Experience in managing education/literacy, media, and training activities in Tanzania a distinct advantage;
- Experience of project fundraising, including networking with donors and drafting project proposals a distinct advantage;
- Ability to make sound judgments on editorially sensitive programme issues;
- Experience in line management of staff;
- Strong commitment to, and understanding of, development issues in Tanzania;
- Experience working with, or understanding of, child protection regulations desirable;
- Strong interpersonal skills, with a proven track record in forming effective relationships with a range of partners and stakeholders;
- Excellent attention to detail;
- Excellent written communication skills, including experience writing project briefs, reports, terms of reference and other project documents;
- Fluency in English and Swahili and ability to write reports in those languages.

Research Officer, Tanzania
Job Purpose:
The Research Officer will support the Research Manager in the coordination and implementation of research as part of an upcoming Maternal and New born Child Health (MNCH) project. The project aims to reduce the number of maternal and neonatal deaths as well as increase community awareness and demand for quality Reproductive, Maternal and New born Child Health (RMNCH) services in Mbeya and Songwe regions. The Research Officer will liaise with local partners and programme participants to support the design, coordination and implementation of research activities to inform and evaluate the project. He/she will make sure that all activities are implemented in a timely and effective manner.

- To support the design of research for training projects and mass media programming, comprising formative research, pre-testing of media materials, and impact evaluation.
- To support in the commissioning and monitoring of all research inputs (e.g. quantitative surveys, focus group sessions, case studies, etc.), working to budget and deadline requirements.
- To conduct literature reviews across a range of issues/ themes and ethnographic studies in the field.
- To conduct fieldwork, including focus group discussions and in-depth interviews in the field.
- To conduct pilots and pre-testing of content and media output in the field.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience required
- University Degree in social sciences, development or any other related field of studies
- Fluent in English and Swahili with ability to write reports and scripts in these languages
- At least three years of experience in working for an international development organisation and/or in the field of research.
- Demonstrable experience designing, implementing and reporting qualitative research (focus groups, interviews etc) and/or quantitative (surveys) research techniques.
- Demonstrable experience managing fieldwork logistics in Tanzania, including ensuring ethics, monitoring of staff, recruitment of participants, and liaison with officials.
- Demonstrate a command of statistical software especially SPSS with the ability understand the dataset and run some average analysis and reporting.
- Practical IT skills, including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to communicate clearly and appropriately both to senior internal and external stakeholders and to research participants
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work speedily and accurately under pressure
- Ability to think logically, take an analytical approach, critically evaluate ideas and interpret information from different sources

Field and online producer, Tanzania
Job Purpose:
BBC Media Action is looking for an experienced, creative and dynamic individual who understands BBC editorial standards and how to implement them within programming output. The field and online producer is responsible for producing a three minute version of Haba na Haba to air weekly on Fridays in BBC Amka.

- Producing video/audio for social media;
- Facilitating and coordinating field production for special events or debate programmes for Haba na Haba.

- Gathers and verifies factual information for weekly topics through interview, observation, and research;
- Organizes material, determines news lines, according to prescribed editorial style and format standards;
- Works cooperatively with the production team on assigned stories, if one is assigned;
- Prepare the episodes of the programme;
- Assist production staff in preparing content for the show’s multimedia platforms;
- Good editing skills.
Desirable
- Experience in behaviour change communications projects, preferably in the health, governance or resilience/livelihoods sectors;
- Prior experience with reputable Swahili broadcaster;
- Good with editing skills.

- Fluent in English and Kiswahili.
